​Unlike imaging studies, which provide information regarding anatomy, electrodiagnostic studies are physiologic tests which assess nerve and muscle function. Such studies are useful when symptoms include pain, weakness, and/or sensory abnormality such as numbness or tingling. They are used to confirm a clinically suspected diagnosis. Physicians performing such studies are trained that it is an extension of the physical examination. As such, it should be tailored to assess each individual patient. A condition such as neck or back pain with associated limb pain, numbness, or weakness are typical scenarios in which such a study would be warranted.
